Welcome to the Journal Blog
Journal now has a blog: a short history of the theme, and what we will be covering here.
For 13 years, Journal has shipped mostly through release notes and changelogs. That has worked, but it leaves out a lot of the why: the reasoning behind a feature, the tradeoffs we weighed, the small decisions that add up to a theme with 37,000+ sales. This blog is where that story lives from now on.
From theme to toolkit
Journal started as one OpenCart theme built to solve a specific problem: give merchants real design control without needing a developer for every change. It has since become the best-selling, best-rated theme on the marketplace, with a 4.9/5 rating across 3,000+ reviews.
The biggest shift came with version 3. What began as a single layout grew into a page builder with 30+ multi-purpose modules, each configurable per breakpoint, so a store can look right on a phone, a tablet, and a desktop without three separate builds. Status and scheduling controls were added on top, so merchants can target modules by device, login state, or customer group, and time-limited promotions can turn themselves off automatically.
Every one of those additions has stayed inside OpenCart’s own admin, compatible across 2.3.x, 3.x, 4.x. That was a deliberate choice: merchants shouldn’t need a second system to run their storefront.
What to expect
A few kinds of posts will show up here:
- Release notes, expanded: what shipped in each Journal update, and why it was built that way.
- Store guides: practical ways to use Journal’s modules, layouts, and customization tools to build a better storefront.
- Behind the theme: the design and performance decisions that shape Journal as it grows.
